Jims Hunt
The season is in full swing the birds are starting to cooperate a little more with some of the hens going to nest. I hunted the first day with Dave Jones it was his first time hunting turkeys in Maine. We worked a nice tom first thing off the roost. The bird came in fairly quick but got around behind Dave and he couldnt make the shot before the bird started to put and headed out . I ran down over the bank away from the hunter and called the bird swung around in front of Daves location. The camera man could see the bird fine and it was close enough for a shot but Dave only got a glimpse and not enouch for a shot. We moved to a new spot on the other side of the river and set up on a hemlock ridge between some fields. There was 4 jakes and some hens in this spot all the week before. My calls were answered by all the jakes but they had and wouldnt budge. We did get a couple hens to join us . One actually flew into the tree above us and I called back and forth with her for awhile till she flew to the jakes. No bird for Dave on this hunt but we will hunt together next week if he can get the time.
The 2nd week of the season I hunted with Jim Gamache [hope I spelled it correct]. Jim has never hunted turkeys and was ready to go. The birds had roosted the night before off a field in some pines so our game plan was to set up at the far end of the field and use decoys. I met Jim at 3:15am and he was anxious to go. We set up the decoys in the pitch black and sat down to wait. We started to call at first light but got no response. About 20 minutes went by and the birds flew down into the fieldand now the game was on . There were 2 birds and they responed to every call as they worked ther'e way to our location. One bird came straght on and the other swung high. With both birds coming fast Jim made the decision to take the one who got there first. The one coming in high walked by me at about 15 yards. He walked right past the first hen decoy and headed for the feeding decoy. I saw Jims gun swing to meet the on coming bird and mubbled under my breath ok Jim cut loose. The gun roared and the bird dropped at about 10 yards. Jims first bird was a 16 pound jake and he couldnt have been more happy. He tells me it tasted real good for supper on thursday. Don
