Moose
Hunt in New HampshireI just returned from a moose hunt in New Hampshire with Brian Cole and John Leonard. These two hunters were a blast to be with. We started the hunt on saturday morning after seeing 4 cows and 1 bull on friday evening. The permit they had was for a cow so spirts were high and everyone was up early. Our strategy was to take a stand in the early morning then hunt the cut off during the day. The temps were in the teens and the day was perfect but no moose. On sunday the plan was to do some calling in the morning stand then hunt the cutoffs once more. The early morning calling produced only hunters coming to the calls, and the afternoon went the same. Monday morning we saw a cow but couldn't catch up to her. The topic of monday nights supper was, we needed to change our approach and hit a new area. On the way out to the new spot we had a cow and calf jump in the road in front of us and they disappeared almost as quick as they arrived. Finally seeing some animals got the blood pumping. The logging road we took had hunters already there so we went to the end to turn around and saw a small bull and a cow. But they were spooky also and left us with no shot. We decided to take a road that some friends had seen a cow and bull the day before. We didn't get up the road far and spoted a large cow on the hill in a cut. Both hunters were out and on her. Brians first shot was on the mark but the big old girl headed off full speed. John put two more rounds in her and she folded. When we got to where she had dropped the high fives started. This cow was huge I said 700 .After field dressing and an easy downhill drag we were off to the check in station. The scales said 715. We stayed one more night at the cozy little camp. In the am we woke to 2 inches of snow loaded the moose on the trailer and headed for home. I'd like to thank Dave and Don Parker and their friend Scott for the camp and all their help. And the hunters Brian and John for making this hunt another memory for an old maine guide.
