Short Season
The 2009 spring turkey season started on Monday May4th and ended [for me anyway] the same day. I look forward to being out there in the turkey woods listening to them come alive and cherish the time out there. The day was cool and calm, my first call brought gobbles from multiple birds and I had to rush to get set up. The old skidder path I was on came into a landing and I set up on the left in front of a big maple. I hurried to get my headnet and gloves on ,lay out my calls ,and waited for another gobble. I responded with a few yelps on the old Quaker Boy call Dick Kirby signed for me years ago and the birds responded imediately and were on the ground already. This could only mean no hens around with them. About 4 more calls on the box and I put it away. They were coming fast, time to change to the slate call. I purred a few times and a jake stepped into the landing. He was gobbleing and every time he would sound off the other bird would gobble back. The jake would have been easy game at 15 yards but I waited for the second bird. The jake kept looking past me and was focused on something so I turned to see what had his attention and saw a tom coming in from the right. I don't know if he snuck around me or these old ears of mine were playing tricks on me again. The tom moved into my shooting lane at about 25 yards the red dot settled on his head and the season was over at 5:30 on the first day. He wasn't my biggest bird but at 18.5 lbs. 7/8 spurs and a 9" beard he was respectable and will taste good on the grill.
