Busy,Busy,Busy
I got a call from a hunter I was lucky enough to guide on a bear hunt last year, yesterday. It was great to hear from him and do some catching up before he arrives for bear season this year. We shot the breeze ,I answered a few questions for him, then he asked why I hadn't added any new stories on the website. I apoligized and explained I had been working at the new lodge since april and hadn't got the chance to write. I thought about it alot yesterday and came to the conclusion that people visiting the site deserved more of my time. Thank you Tim for bringing it to my attention and I will try to keep up with the news. If anyone has questions on anything from game, to the weather here in Maine feel free to get in touch with me and I will do my best to answer.
The spring has been a little cooler this year than in the past. The bugs seemed to be a few weeks behind their normal irritating schedule. That really didn't hurt my feelings because we had a canoe trip on the allagash river the first week of June and the bugs were minimal. I love the trips on the allagash there is always something new to see and experience. The fishing this year was great. There were numerous keepers caught and brought to the frying pan each night. There is something about the taste of fresh caught native brookies on a river trip that appeals to everyone. We saw a considerable amount of moose this year and had a cow and her last years calf come splashing toward one of the canoes setting the paddles in reverse fast. Dave and I went out for some after supper fishing above Long Lake dam and ran into a large bull feeding in the lake. His back was toward us so we paddled right up to him and got a good look at his rack. He sported about a 36" spread with good eye guards. First week of June, that is going to be one nice set of antlers come September. Our stop on the third night of our trip was eventful. After unloading the canoes and making camp for the night we were settling down with a few cold beverages when the wind started to pick up. There were some sleeping bags and other items hanging on a pole to dry out. As the wind increased the the items started lifting off the pole, the winds started to swirl and lifted one tent,a sleeping bag, and a sleeping pad into the air. It was like watching the Wizard of Oz, the wind was howling and we were all running to try to grab the things we could .The tent never tumbled over, it stayed as if it was still staked down but the wind lifted it hundreds of feet in the air with the other items. As we watched helplessly the wind took everything out over the river twice before loosening it's grip and sending them tumbling into the water. People were scrambling to retrieve their belongings. It was an incredible sight to have witnessed what we all agreed to be a small tornado. After that episode the trip went smooth, but I am sure that none of us will ever forget the day ,The wind began to switch,The tent to pitch. Don
