Back in the woods!

Guide TalkThe game is on!

It been 365 days and finally I'm back in the woods where I belong. The beginning of bait season started yesterday. Dave and myself logged in 12 hours and numerous miles starting the process that eventually leads to our clients getting a chance at a bear. The summer has been very wet and a lot of our territory has been hit with washouts leaving us some hard work ahead. But we are use to it and almost thrive on the new challenge.
The bears are showing up here and there at homes and crossing roads in search of food. With all the rain we have had in the last couple months the berries will be a big factor to this years hunt. Raspberries are almost gone by as I type this story, the blueberry crop is minimal compared to last year, but the damn blackberries seem to be everywhere. I'm hoping for a real hot August to dry up the blacks fast so the bears will be pounding the baits . We have been fortunate this year to gain access to some more big chunks of land behind gates that should prove to put some big bears on the pole. The purchase of more game cams for this year will give us some good pics of what is going on before a bait is ever hunted.
Western Maine Outfitters has taken on a couple new lines this year. A new line of tree stands called Big Dog, will compliment our inventory of Gorillas and Clints Specials. In the scent line we have a dealership in Bear Scents, and Silver Scent. The bear scents we have used for some time now and everyone who has hunted with us knows the smell of anise, which we will have for sale at our lodge. Silver Scent is a human scent eliminator. We all know the importance of keeping scent to a minimum and this new product is worth it's wait in Silver, no pun intended.
Enough about bears. The deer are showing up everywhere. The talk about how bad the deer herd is ,is just that talk. I have been seeing lots of does with fawns and a few bucks are showing up in the wrong places already. The other day I was checking some raspberries for bear, sign and a buck jumped out of his bed not 20 yards ahead of me and gave me a good look at those 150 class antlers. He was just a short way away from one of our food plots so I set up a cam to try and get his pic. Our food plots have done well with the rains this year helping us with at least one aspect of our bussiness. Clint has worked very hard this year on his gardening skills so to speak, and the deer are loving it. Speaking of Clint. He was out working on a food plot about 2 weeks ago and messed himself up pinching a nerve in his back. Being laid up and not being out in the woods with us is driving him crazy but hopefully by the time bear season rolls around he will be as good as new, if not all you hunters will have to put up with him at the lodge everyday LOL.
