Deer season
We had our first snow yesterday. Some of the areas we hunt had up to 4 inches. I took some pics today of the mountains around the lodge in Phillps and they still are all white. I just love the snow, well at least till the end of deer season then it's a pain in the butt. Tracking is my favorite way to hunt .It's not the only way I hunt but it"s what I live for.Fresh snow ,a big track and turn me loose. Some times I win but most times the buck wins. At 55 years old I guess I'm ok with that. I hunted up north since the mid 70s at a camp I own but the deer herd has gone from fantastic to fantasshit . The logging practices are to blame I don't care what anyone else says. Removing all the winter areas and giving the coyotes less area to have to hunt in has caused some damage that may never be repaired in my life time. Here in the western mountains the woods are completely different. There is still wintering areas enough so the coyotes have to work to kill their prey. Not that they still don't get their share, but at least some survive to replenish the herd. This year is no different then any other. The herd is in good shape and there will be more then enough to go around. I bet you will hear the same thing from hunters this year[the deer are gone, winter kills were so high there is nothing left]. To that I say get your fat ass out of your truck and hunt. The food sources this year are abundant and the so called hunters who rate their season on how many miles they put on will be complaning again. Look at some of the articles written by hunters in the know and you will see they view it the same as I. So if you are a person who wants to be in the woods chasing the buck of a lifetime, he is still out there. I hope I get him before you.LOL. Good luck everyone. To all the of you guys from NJ and Philli coming to see us in November get in shape and be ready for some tough terrain because this is the Mountains of Maine and those big ones don't come easy. Don
