Guide Talk - Western Maine Outfitters Weekly Update Hello everyone! Welcome to our guide talk column. I will be bringing you news and updates about what is going on at Western Maine Outfitters and in our region. I should start by thanking some people in our company who put in countless hours for us. Brian Phelps who is our Public Relations and Advertising expert, was put to the test when we decided to attend the Harrisburg, PA show. He not only designed and printed our new literature, he also designed this website and it was up and running in just a few short weeks. The other person I would like to thank is Cary Bradbury. She is our Office Manager and the go to person in the company whenever there is a problem. Cary spent numerous hours making sure every little detail was covered making our trip to PA come off without a hitch. Cary and Brian, we couldn't have done it without you .Old man winter did it to us again this week. Six to eight inches of new snow fell this week with some below zero temperatures to go along with it. Reminds me of the winters when I was young. Boy was that a long time ago! Anyway, the good news is that the cold and snow aren't having a great impact on the wildlife. The bears are still all snug in their winter dens where they have spent almost three months now. The sows that have given birth to cubs are nursing those little ones who at birth you could hold in the palm of your hand. The boars are still in a deep sleep with still a couple of months to go. When they do arise from their long winter nap, bears come out of their dens and seek green vegetation for their first meals. Once the intestinal cleaning process is thru they will most likely be seeking out last years bait sites as one of their normal feeding routes. The moose all seem to be doing well as the snow depths really don't seem to affect them much. The bulls have dropped their antlers and soon will be showing signs of new ones. Hunting for moose sheds is big in our area. As I type this piece, Mike, ones of the guides is out searching the country side for some of those prized items. We have a good selection of moose antlers and if anyone is interested in purchasing some shoot us an email or call the office @1-207-364-7500. While it might seem that the snow depths will make it hard for the whitetails this year. Fact is, the way the snow and rains came they are actually able to move around quite well. The deer we hunt here in the western mountains carry some of the biggest body weights in the state.Good feed throughout the year helps them maintain thru even the toughest winters. Hope you enjoy this column I look forward to sharing some stories from the woods and waters with you. Keep your tail up and nose to the wind! Don |
