Maine has a black Bear population of 24,000 animals. They roam the entire state with the largest concentrations
being located in the central and northern regions. The average
harvest each year is between 3,000 and 3,500 animals. Of the annual
figure 73% are taken over bait 11% with hounds 8% by deer hunters 6%
by trappers, and 2% by other means. These figures result in a state
average of 8.5 bears harvested per 100 square miles.
The Western Maine Mountains have some of the
roughest terrain in the state, giving the bears plenty of room to
roam and grow big. Each year many 400 lbs. to 500 lbs. and a few tipping
the scales at 600 lbs. are taken. With the availability of both hard
and soft mast crops to feed on the animals put on weight fast.
Our hunts at the Western Maine Outfitters are
done over bait from sturdy metal tree stands at 16 feet or well
concealed ground blinds. We strive to place our hunters on active
baits that are attracting bears. Our policy is no sows and cubs. We
limit our number of hunters to provide everyone with the service
they deserve. The hunt is a full 6 days not 5. Arrivals and
departures are on Sundays. Our fully guided hunts include lodging,
meals,
transportation and game care. The self guided hunts include lodging,
a bait site, and bait for the week. Both our hunts use only active
baits that have been tended for the legal time of 30 days prior to
the season opener.
On all hunts we encourage women and children hunters.
For all levels of a quality hunting experience we feel we are
skilled to meet the individual needs, from first timers to those of
you who have had years of hunting opportunities.
